Pros of Life in a Small Town

While small towns aren’t known for their night life and entertainment, we do tend to associate the cozy things in life with small town living. There’s also much to say about how much money you can save by relocating to a small town. Everyone is familiar with the high cost of living in places like New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco and Los Angeles – homeownership is not a reality for many residents in these places and rent is among the highest in the nation. There are many benefits to living in a small town apart from the fact that they’re not overcrowded and a lot more affordable. If you still prefer to be close to big city amenities, you can always find a sleepy little town on the outskirts of a bigger city that will give you the best of both worlds.

  • Living in a small town means that there is less crime and a bigger sense of safety. Young kids can easily play outside without worrying about traffic or stranger danger, people can leave their bikes chained in front of a coffee shop without worrying about it being stolen and you can leave your windows cracked when parking outdoors – even if you park in your driveway! While no city is ever safe from crime, there is a lot less of it in a small town and it doesn’t happen as often. A sense of safety and security is extremely important, especially for families with young children and elderly residents – we all want to know that we are safe in our homes.
  • When there are fewer residents that means that there are less cars on the road, which leads to less traffic and pollution. In certain small towns you might be able to drive across town from one to the other in 10 minutes, which makes commuting an almost pleasant experience. With less traffic you will be able to save time and gas money, and in some cases, you may not even need a car especially if you prefer to walk or bike to where you need to go. Another side effect of fewer cars on the road means that there is less pollution and the air is cleaner overall. This is a big bonus because outdoor living is a big part of life in a small town.
  • Going out on a Saturday night in a big city almost always means you will be waiting in line for 45 minutes to an hour for a table at a nice restaurant, or the movie you want to see could be sold out. You won’t run into these types of issues in a small town, and in general you will find that there are less crowds. Far away from the hustle and bustle of a big city you will find that the pace of small towns is slower and more relaxed, which can be a very welcome change.
  • We know that real estate prices are lower in small towns, but what’s more important is that everything else also comes at a lower price tag. Consumer goods, groceries, gas, dining out and the general cost of living is lower, which means you can save more money without sacrificing the things that are important to you. Not to mention that small towns tend to also have lower property taxes!
  • You will find that living in a small town allows you the opportunity to become a big fish in a small pond, with a lot less competition for jobs and a great opportunity to establish yourself in your community and earn a well-known reputation. You’re more likely to stand out in your chosen field in a small town and earn recognition than you would in a big city with many other people striving for the same goals and opportunities.
  • City skylines and expansive coastal views are breathtaking, but they also come with a hefty price tag. Driving through a small town you’ll notice that the views are absolutely beautiful and tranquil, it’ll keep you calm and slow down your breath, which is good for the soul and for your health and happiness.
Cons of Life in a Small Town

As wonderful as it is to enjoy a slower pace of life in a small town, there are certainly things that you will miss from big city living.

  • If you consider yourself to be a high-powered and career driven individual, then life in a small town might not be suitable for you. There’s less employment opportunity in a small town than in a big city, but you can always choose to commute a greater distance into the city if you choose to. Bryan, TX is a short one-hour drive from Buffalo, TX and in Bryan the job market is booming with career opportunities in universities, hospitals, tech companies, engineering and so much more.
  • A small town means that you may not have unlimited and easy access to public transportation. This may or may not be a bad thing, in most cases you won’t need access to public transportation because commutes are short, and you won’t run into heavy traffic jams the way you would in a big city. Apart from owning a car, you could ride a bike, carpool and walk short distances if you need to.
  • Big cities are known for hot restaurants headlined by celebrity chefs, popular nightclubs with guests lining up around the corner waiting for entrance and a slew of entertainment to indulge in. In a small town you’re more likely to enjoy music from a local group at a neighborhood café or bar, and dining options may be limited to one-of-a-kind mom and pop restaurants that serve up delicious recipes passed down for generations. Select big chain restaurants do make their way into certain small towns so you won’t miss out on your favorite fast food options. Either way, you can’t complain!
  • In a small town you will know who everyone is, and everyone will know who you are. This could be seen as a pro or a con – depending on how you look at it. In a small town you won’t go unnoticed and you’re more likely to face opposing opinions and unsolicited advice, which can be difficult to face if you value your independence. On the other hand, it’s good to know that you have a whole community that will back you up and rally to help you in a time of need. There’s something pretty special about everyone looking out for one another in a small town.

As you can see, there are various pros and cons to life in a small town – it all comes down to your personal preferences and lifestyle.
