Rental Scams: A few things to look out for

Dear Friends,

I’m sure you’ve seen this type of an email if you’ve ever had a property for lease.  Craig’s list is the most prevalent place to get bogus inquiries about available rentals.  They want your contact information.  They want you to provide them with just enough information so they can turn around and post your property for lease acting like the landlord so unsuspecting people will send them a deposit.  Or they may want you to cash a check for them…  They give you just enough detail to think that they are legitimate.  Anytime someone sends you an email from one email  address and they want you to contact them at another address,  or immediately talk about bank transfers and/or a third parties sending you the money, especially if they’ve never even seen the property,  DELETE the email.  These bogus emails are typically full of typos, poor English, and almost always require you to provide them with personal information.  Don’t do it. What potential tenant needs to know who the property owner is in an initial inquiry? And how many employers do you know of who would ever make a lease payment on behalf of their employees?    I get these scams all the time.  These people have Pinprick brains that couldn’t fill a thimble, and they’re very unoriginal. I especially liked the phone call I got from someone wanting to lease my own personal house because of the ad they saw on Craig’s List.   Don’t waste your time and don’t let them waste yours. Rental Scams are against the law.

Subject: house for lease

Hello –

Thanks for the details provided, I’m really interested in renting the property and I’m OK with the price. Currently I’m in England, United Kingdom, I assemble racing car for ‘RACETECH CARS LIMITED’. My company is sending me to the states to buy some car parts and once I buy the car parts, I will ship them to the UK. I will be coming to states with my fiancee and both of us will be living in the property together.

I spoke with my company about the price required to move into the property. They have agreed to issue out the payment for the first month and the security deposit. We will be staying in the property for 12 months which we can extend the contract after our stay in the property has expired and all future payment will be made by bank transfer every month. If you agree with these terms, I would require you to kindly email me the following details listed below:

Full name to be written on check:

Mailing Address:

Home number:

Mobile number:

As soon as I receive the above details from you, I will forward it to my company so that they can issue out the check to you immediately. We’ll be moving into the property on the 20th of October and all the necessary paperwork will be signed in person when we arrive in the states. I would really appreciate it if you can email me more interior pictures of the property. I await your response.

Regards

Robert Bevins
