Ten Reasons to Live in College Station

College Station, set deep in the heart of East Central Texas in the Brazos Valley, is home to the main campus of Texas A&M University. Regularly listed among the nation’s best college towns, the local student population outnumbers the permanent residents – but that doesn’t mean that College Station doesn’t have something to offer for everyone. From sporting events and outdoor activities, to local museums and exhibits, you’re guaranteed to find something you’ll enjoy here! Here’s a list of ten of the top reasons to live in College Station.

  1. Texas A&M University. When you mention Bryan-College Station, the first thing that comes to most people’s mind is Texas A&M University – and for good reason. Texas A&M truly is a place like no other – just ask any Aggie; they love to share their favorite traditions! If the game day festivities and traditions aren’t enough, U.S. News and World Report recently included Texas A&M in its list of Top 20 public universities, and The Wall Street Journal ranked Texas A&M second in its list of universities where corporations would find well-rounded and prepared recruits.
  1. Downtown Bryan. From catching a show at Grand Stafford Theatre to picking up a few pieces at Burr’s Unfinished Furniture for your weekend DIY projects, downtown Bryan truly has something to offer everyone. Stroll through the streets of Downtown Bryan, enjoying the sights and taking in the history – you’ll soon see for yourself what the buzz is all about!
  1. George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. Situated on the Texas A&M campus, the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum is a top destination for students and families, as well as researchers and history buffs. With its astounding 43 million pages of documents, as well as thousands of museum artifacts and objects, the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum is definitely a place you can explore again and again, learning something new each time. There is also a separate section of the museum dedicated to Barbara Bush, the former first lady, as well as a classroom designed for students of all ages.
  1. Low Unemployment. Another great reason to live in College Station is the consistently low rate of unemployment. Bryan-College Station’s unemployment rate hovers right around 3-4%, which is significantly lower than the national average of just over 6%. One of the key factors for this is Texas A&M – the university plays a large role in the local economy, employing over 16,000 people. Other major employers in Bryan-College Station are St. Joseph Regional Health Care Center, Reynolds and Reynolds, and the Bryan and College Station Independent School Districts.
  1. Kyle Field. Football is king in Aggie Country, and Kyle Field does not disappoint when it comes to a great place to watch a game. It has been home to the Aggies since the early 1900s, and has been a complete stadium since 1927. Its current seating capacity of 106,511 makes it the largest stadium in Texas, and the third largest stadium in the NCAA. Just this month, Kyle Field set an attendance record, when almost 105,000 people watched the Aggies take on the Lamar Cardinals. Kyle Field has been described more than once as one of the most intimidating college football stadiums in the nation, which makes for a great home field advantage!
  1. Low Cost of Living. Even with all that College Station has to offer, it still boasts a cost of living that is almost 4% lower than the national average. Combine this with the relatively low median price of College Station homes, and it’ s #2 position on Forbes’ list of best small places for business and careers, and it becomes a very affordable – and attainable – place to call home!
  1. Population Size. With a population hovering right around 100,000 people, College Station has often been described as having a “not too big, but not too small” feel. This may just be the place for you if you’re looking for a city with a hometown feel – that also offers plenty of things to do.
  1. Food. One of most enjoyable, and diverse, aspects of College Station is its food scene. From ribs and pulled pork at C&J Barbeque to fine dining and private dinners at Veritas – and everything in between – you’re sure to find something to satisfy even the most discriminating of diners.
  1. Location, Location, Location. College Station is located in East Central Texas, and is within driving distance to several of Texas’s most popular destinations, including Austin, San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas/Ft. Worth. College Station’s central location makes it easy to take advantage of all that Texas has to offer – the perfect starting point for day trips!
  1. Entertainment. True to college town form and fashion, College Station features plenty of options to keep you entertained. Whether you want to relax and unwind by watching a movie or playing a game of pool, or hit the dance floor and hear some of the area’s best live music, you’re sure to find something to do every night of the week – definitely a great reason to live in College Station!
