Weathering the storm in College Station, TX

We are wishing all our friends and associates well during Hurricane Harvey.  We’ve seen a lot of rain, but we’re safe in the Brazos County and weathering the storm.

The Emergency Preparedness Board that EVERY person should follow:    This site on Pinterest is an accumulation of everything to do with taking care of your home and family in case of emergency including survival skills.  It’s an absolute wealth of knowledge on every topic providing ‘how to’ instructions, do it yourself, and things you may not have thought of.  What’s more important than our homes and families?  You and I need a plan for ‘what if’ situations.  We need to teach it to our kids so they can teach theirs someday.  I’ll continue to add important information, so bookmark this site and get going. As daunting as it sounds,  I can’t tell you how important it is! By the inch it’s a cinch.   Start with a 72 hour kit which is also called a ‘bug out bag’.  I know for a fact that if my children had to suffer some day because of something that I didn’t do when I had the opportunity, I will probably suffer more than them.   I maintain that I can’t do everything, but I can do a few things, little by little, line upon line, one day at a time,  and I can truly ‘TRY’ to prepare every needful thing as time and money permits.   I wish the best for you and yours.  Myke Leatham

This is a great tutorial from the Red Cross on how  to be ready for a medical emergency

Food Storage Food Storage
What should you have on hand in your home in case of an emergency? This may be the BEST insurance policy you’ll ever buy!   Build a small supply of food that is part of your normal, daily diet. One way to do this is to purchase a few extra items each week to build a one-week supply of food. Then you can gradually increase your supply until it is sufficient for three months. These items should be rotated regularly to avoid spoilage.

What should be in my food storage in case of emergency?  How to get started
The church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints continues to be a fabulous resource and forerunner with regard to Emergency Preparedness. People are taught to buy an extra can of food when they go to the store. One little step at a time to ensure the safety and security of families. Having Food Storage and Emergency Essentials on hand is the CHEAPEST INSURANCE POLICY you’ll ever have!

National self Reliance Association              Being self-reliant doesn’t mean that you are ready for every situation.  It does mean that you are more aware than most of the people in your neighborhood and that you care enough to take gradual steps to take care of yourself and your home in case of emergency.  I applaud you and wish you success.  Feel free to call me if you have comments or suggestions.  I’m always happy to help, and I’m here if you need me.   Myke Leatham

Water Purification and Storage:  In a harsh environment — it’s snowing, say — you have 3 hours to survive without shelter. After 3 days, you need water or you’ll perish. You can make it 3 weeks without food, though we promise you that won’t be fun. Despite this possibly helpful rule, some people have survived 8 to 10 days without water.  Do you really think it’s wise to rely on someone else for water?  Wouldn’t it be a good idea to have some back up water just in case of an emergency?
