Winter Storm Headed to Brazos Valley

January 15, 2018 by Rachel Clark

With the winter storm on its way, the nice folks over at BTUtilities sent me the following message today and most of the information should apply to College Station Utility customers as well.

The 7-day forecast from KBTX shows that it will be warming up to above freezing on Wednesday & Thursday.  Weather.com shows that we will have rain/wintry mix tonight & tomorrow.  Check the school website or Facebook pages or go to KBTX for a list of closings. It is not mentioned but your should drip your faucets inside & out, and keep the cabinets open under sinks to prevent frozen pipes.  Make sure your animals are protected from the freezing temperatures as well.

Bryan Texas Utilities Customers Should Prepare For Winter Storm

BRYAN, TEXAS – Bryan Texas Utilities is preparing customers for what actions to take should they experience an outage during the winter storm that is anticipated to hit Monday night (Jan. 15, 2018).

If an outage occurs during these especially cold temperatures, customers are asked to take the following steps to help BTU crews restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

  • Turn off your heater: If your heater immediately kicks back on after a cold-weather outage, the amount of electricity required to turn it on can cause the system to shut down again. Wait 15-30 minutes after power is restored to start turning your heater and appliances back on. This includes space heaters, which require a large amount of electricity.
  • Conserve: Avoid using your heater and appliances at the same time. Put off running dishwashers, washers, and dryers unless absolutely needed and turn off any extra lights you do not need.
  • Utilize the BTU outage map: In the event of an outage, your meter will tell BTU System Operators that there is a problem, so there is no need to call. This also allows BTU Operators to focus on helping the linemen restore power.

Customers are encouraged to follow BTU on Facebook (@BryanTexasUtilities) and Twitter (@BTU_BryanTX) for timely updates and information.

Stay Warm and Safe!
